Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

However, the southern French side fired two times late to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
