The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
