Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior political figure said the vandalism made him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
